PS6 Release Date, Price and Specs: What Sony Has Actually Said (and Our Prediction)

Updated 12 October 2026. “PS6 release date confirmed”, “PS6 price leaked”, “PS6 specs revealed” — headlines like these appear every week. The reality is simpler: Sony has not announced the PlayStation 6. But Sony executives have said a fair amount about why the timing is still open, and that tells us more than most leaks.
Here is what Sony has actually said, what the rumours claim, and when we think the PS6 will really arrive.
Has Sony Announced the PS6?
No. There is no official name, release date, price or specification sheet. The PS5 (and PS5 Pro) remains Sony’s current home console.
What Sony Has Actually Said
The most important statements come from Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki:
- On Sony’s May 2026 earnings call, he said the company has not decided the next console’s launch timing or price, and that memory prices are expected to remain very high through fiscal year 2027 because of supply shortages (TheSixthAxis, VGC).
- He said Sony is running “various simulations”, including possibly changing business models, and has indicated it does not intend to sell next-generation hardware at a significant loss.
- In a later Wall Street Journal interview he repeated that the release date and price are still undecided (TweakTown).
The memory shortage is the real story
Consoles need large amounts of fast memory, and memory prices have climbed sharply as AI data centres absorb supply. Major memory makers have said shortages could last through at least 2028 (TweakTown PS6 hub). That directly affects what a PS6 would cost to build — and therefore when Sony can launch it at a price people will pay.
Discs are going away
On 1 July 2026, Sony announced it will stop manufacturing physical discs for new PlayStation games from January 2028; new releases after that will be digital, with retail products using download codes (TechCrunch). Existing disc games can still be re-pressed (VGC). Analysts read this as a strong hint that the PS6 will not ship with a disc drive — even GTA 6’s boxed edition contains only a code.
PS6 Rumours: Specs, Handheld and Price
Unconfirmed — treat as rumour. Reports collected by outlets such as Tom’s Guide claim:
| Rumour | What’s claimed |
|---|---|
| CPU | Custom AMD chip based on Zen 6 |
| GPU | AMD RDNA 5 graphics with much stronger ray tracing |
| Memory | GDDR7 |
| Performance | Up to around three times the PS5 |
| Handheld | A separate PlayStation handheld, reportedly codenamed “Canis” |
| Price | Anything from $500 to $1,000+, depending on the source |
The AMD partnership is the safest bet — Sony has used AMD chips since the PS4 — but the exact numbers should be taken lightly. Former PlayStation boss Shawn Layden has publicly questioned whether better ray tracing alone can justify a console approaching $1,000.
Should You Buy a PS5 Now or Wait for the PS6?
It’s one of the most searched questions about the PS6, and the answer depends on what you want to play and when.
- Buy a PS5 now if you want to play GTA 6 this year, or any of the big releases coming over the next two years. With no PS6 date set — and our expectation that it is still a couple of years away — waiting means missing a lot of games.
- Consider a PS5 Pro if you have a high-end TV and want the best image quality in the meantime. Just remember it has no disc drive built in, which matters less now that new games are moving to digital.
- Wait if you already own a PS5 and are happy with it. Your digital library is very likely to carry forward, so there’s no rush to upgrade until Sony actually reveals the PS6 and its price.
- Don’t pre-order anything labelled “PS6”. There is no official PS6 pre-order. Any listing, deposit scheme or “reservation” you see today is a scam or placeholder.
Whatever you decide, buying a PS5 today doesn’t lock you out of the next generation — it just means you’ll be playing in the meantime.
Our Predictions
These are HexaPixora’s predictions, not confirmed information.
- Release: holiday 2028 is most likely. Before the memory crisis, late 2027 looked right. With Sony saying memory stays expensive through FY2027 and refusing big hardware losses, we think late 2028 is now the most likely window. A 2027 launch would need memory prices to fall faster than suppliers expect.
- Digital-only by default. With new disc games ending in January 2028, we expect the standard PS6 to have no disc drive, possibly with an optional add-on like today’s PS5 Digital Edition.
- Price: $699 or more for the base model. We don’t expect a sub-$500 PS6. Our estimate is $699–$799 for the standard console, with any $999 figure belonging to a premium or “Pro”-style model.
- PS5 games will work on PS6. Sticking with AMD makes backward compatibility relatively straightforward, and Sony will want your existing digital library to move with you.
- A handheld will come first or alongside. A cheaper PlayStation handheld that streams or plays PS5-era games would let Sony grow the platform while the full console waits for memory prices to settle.
- The announcement will come about a year before launch. If we’re right about late 2028, expect an official reveal during 2027.
Final Thoughts
The PS6 hasn’t been announced, its release date and price are genuinely undecided, and the biggest factor is the cost of memory rather than any secret leak. Until Sony reveals it officially, treat specific dates and prices as speculation — including ours.

Frequently Asked Questions
No. As of October 2026 Sony has not officially announced the PlayStation 6, and its CEO has said the release date and price have not been decided.
There is no official date. Because Sony expects memory prices to stay high through fiscal 2027, our prediction is a holiday 2028 launch, though a 2027 release is possible if prices fall faster.
Unconfirmed. Sony will stop manufacturing discs for new PlayStation games from January 2028, which analysts read as a strong sign the PS6 will be digital-first without a built-in drive.
Sony hasn't said. Rumours range from $500 to over $1,000. Our estimate is $699 to $799 for a standard model, with higher prices for any premium version.
